WEEKLY UPDATE – US PLEDGES BILLIONS TO SOLVE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM, MEANWHILE CDN UNEMPLOYMENT CREEPS UPWARDS It was a week in which billions of dollars were pledged to solve the joblessness problem in the United States, and more reality set in on that score here in Canada, with unemployment inching slightly upward.

The S&P TSX Composite Index finished Friday at 12,097.09, trailing last Friday`s close by 47.83 points or 0.4%. The TSX Venture Exchange, however, gained 30.54 points on the week, or 2%, to 1,596.50.

In the States, the Dow Jones industrial average enjoyed its second straight weekly improvement, picking up 14.84 points, or 0.1%, to 10,462.77. The S&P 500 index finished at 1,109.55, gaining 5.04 points or 0.5%. The tech-rich Nasdaq composite index moved forward 8.73 points or 0.4% to 2,242.48.

Economically speaking, the Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate Wednesday and said the country’s recovery will be slower than it had projected because of a weaker outlook for the U.S.

economy.

The bank raised its target rate for overnight loans between commercial banks to 1% from 0.75%, in line with analysts’ estimates.

Further increases would need to be“carefully considered” given uncertainty around the outlook, the BofC said on Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, Statistics Canada said the total value of building permits issues by municipalities decreased 3.3% to $6.4 billion.

Economists predicted a 4.9% drop.

Stateside, the Federal Reserve showed that consumer debt fell by $3.6 billion U.S. in July — far less than the$5.25 billion U.S. decrease predicted by economists.

Thursday, StatsCan said Canada’s trade deficit with the world widened to a record $2.7 billion in July from $1.8 billion in June, with exports falling and imports growing, the high Canadian dollar was mostly to blame for the trade imbalance. Also, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said the number of housing starts in August was up 3% from July to 183,300.

In the U.S., the trade deficit slipped to $42.8 billion U.S. in July, much lower than the expected $47.3-billion U.S. deficit.

Then, on Friday, came word that Canada’s unemployment rate actually grew a 10th of a percentage point to 8.1%, despite adding 36,000 jobs.

The increase in the unemployment rate was a result of more people actively looking for work.

Canadian food distributor Alimentation Couche-Tard was in a buying mood this week, announcing Friday that it was picking up 12 grocery stores in Indiana, while still on the trail of Iowa-based Casey`s General Stores Inc. Couche-Tard faces stiff competition from the likes of convenience store giant 7-Eleven Inc.

U.S. President Barack Obama, reckoning that his economy needed a further shot in the arm, announced up to $350 billion U.S. in job-creating stimuli, in the form of tax cuts and infrastructure spending. Folks down south aren’t setting their watches on lawmakers passing the package with blinding speed, because of the looming mid-term elections.

In the coming week, look for new motor vehicle sales out in Canada on Tuesday, while Wednesday promises Canadian manufacturing numbers.

The American calendar is a bit fuller, promising retail sales on Tuesday, import and export prices on Wednesday, along with industrial production figures. Wholesale inflation (Producer Price Index) numbers come in Thursday, and retail inflation (Consumer Price Index) on Friday.

Among stocks we watched this short week, Bridge Resources Corp.

(TSX-Venture:BUK) gained a respectable 1.5 cents, or 3.2%, on the week, to close at 48 cents, after reaching 50 during the week. Laser imaging company Isee3d Inc. (TSX-Venture:ICT) progressed 5.5 cents or 11.8% to 52 cents, after flirting with the height of 56 cents.

In the States, health-care up-and-comer Sinobiopharma Inc.

(OTCBB:SNBP) inched up 1.1 cents or 4.3% to 26.6 cents. Its price did go as high as 27. To complete the four-stock sweep, San West Inc.

(OTCBB:SNWT), maker of ATVs and off-road buggies, also moved ahead 0.32 cents or 27.1%, to finish the week at 1.5 cents, also its high for the week.

If you’d invested in all four stocks and held them to the end, you’d have seen an average leap of 11.6%. However, if you’d bought at the beginning of the week and sold each at its peak, your gain would have been even larger, averaging 15.2%.

Next week, the spotlight is on junior miners Redhawk Resources Inc.

(TSX-Venture:RDK) and Roca Mines Inc. (TSX-Venture:ROK) in Canada. In the US, we shine the light on electric car manufacturer ZAP (OTCBB:ZAAP) and telecommunications firm China Crescent Enterprises Inc. (OTCBB:CCTR).

Among our Company spotlights, Kore Nutrition Inc. (OTCBB:KORE) and the Company`s wholly owned subsidiary, Go All In, Inc. (“ALL IN”) announced earlier this week a new distribution agreement with PPNC Distributing Co. of Placentia, California (“PPNC”). ALL IN Energy products have been accepted for distribution to over 400 grocery stores in Southern California.

With a client list including convenience stores and markets in close proximity to major casino distribution hubs currently being established, PPNC will play an integral role in ALL IN`s Southern California growth plan.

PPNC President, Tyler Schwartz, stated, “We are finding that consumers are better educated about these products today and are actually reading labels, checking ingredients and nutritional information, before making a purchase. ALL IN`s distinct advantage will be its uniqueness, offering the market an energy drink that is sugar and caffeine free, fortified with B12, B6, and Niacin, and all with only ten calories. This advantage, when applied to the niche poker enthusiast market and in conjunction with this increased health factor awareness, is a platform we can market easily in-store and in our print advertising.” While the steady stream of news flow on KORE is very encouraging, the stock price has been lingering lower since our Company spotlight.

There seems to be plenty of interest in the stock which is quite evident with the record volume it’s been getting over the last week or so, but as of yet, this volume has not been strong enough to take the stock price higher. Even though the stock is currently down, fundamentally the Company is growing by leaps and bounds and we are hopeful that that will soon translate to some positive momentum for the stock price.

Lastly, we would like to remind out investors of an upcoming investment conference in Toronto.
